Author Series At the Cafe: Oct. 25th from 4:00pm - 6:00pm
Bob Ferguson, author of Some Days Chicken, Some Days Feathers
A 320 page memoir crammed with delicious humor, yet Ferguson's
poignant Vietnam experiences will bring a tear to the reader's eye.
Comments from early reviewers, “Magnificent,” “One of the best books I
have ever read and I read a lot,” “It is a well written book.” Ferguson
says, “Of course, these are my friends, but their overwhelming enthusiasm
has pleasantly stunned me.”
Ferguson was born in Portland, Oregon, but the book follows the family's
many moves from Astoria to Bend where he records one of his earliest
recollections of harvesting potatoes as a preschooler. He attended elementary and
high schools in Eugene graduating from South Eugene in 1961. “I led a
bunch of senior classmates on a panty raid of a 'house of ill-repute' that we
still laugh about.” he said.
Ferguson graduated from Linfield College in 1965 and earned All-American
football honors playing for Coach Paul Durham. From there he joined the
Marine Corps and became a photo reconnaissance officer in the F-4 Phantom jet.
Midway through his 1968 Vietnam tour he was assigned to a ground unit as a
Forward Air Controller conducting air strikes in support of the ground
troops.
Since leaving the Marines in 1969, Ferguson has been the director of Camp
Easter Seal, a camp for handicapped kids near Coos Bay, a stock broker in
Portland in 1973 and owned a manufacturer’s representative agency for the
last 35 years. At age 61 he earned a Master’s in Teaching degree and now
enjoys substitute teaching. “One day I was teaching eighth graders to write a
memoir. It was fun and that got me to working on my own story,” Ferguson
said.
Ferguson believes that every person has a good story to tell. On October
25th from 4:00 to 6:00 pm in The Clearing Cafe he will talk about his book
and conduct a works that will give the audience the tools to write their own
stories.
His workshops are fun-filled and he invites libraries, book stores,
schools, and senior centers to contact him to schedule a book talk at their
venue.
